IMMUNOTHERAPY
What is immunotherapy?
Immunotherapy is the administration of allergen extracts (dust, pollen, fungus, food, etc) in gradually increasing doses, either by injections or sublingual drops (drops below the tongue) over a period of time, so the body gets less sensitive to them(desensitization). The responses are custom made as per your allergies diagnosed by skin prick testing and doses are adjusted as per each patient’s requirements.
What are the drops made of?
The drops are made of purified concentrated allergen extracts obtained by a standardised extraction procedure. Allergens are the natural proteins found in different things like pollen, fungus, dust mites, food, etc which cause the allergy reaction.
How do they work?
Allergy drops are placed below the tongue where they are absorbed into the bloodstream by special cells. These drops are now proven to be as effective as Injections which are directly administered in the bloodstream. They act directly on your immune system by reducing its sensitivity to the particular substance that you are allergic to.
Do they work for food allergies? And food related diseases?
Studies have shown that sublingual immunotherapy is extremely helpful in food allergies. It is safer than injectable immunotherapy (allergy shots) in patients with high risk of anaphylaxis. related complications like eosinophilic oesophagitis, oral allergy syndrome and interstitial cystitis can be controlled with immunotherapy
How safe are they in pregnancy?
The allergy drops are extremely safe in pregnancy as per studies. If you have started therapy and discovered that you are pregnant, you can still continue with the therapy. However, if you are expecting or planning to start a family, it’s appropriate to start the therapy after your delivery
Is there a scientific proof for sublingual immunotherapy?
The ARIA (allergic rhinitis and its impact on asthma) guidelines and the World Health Organisation (WHO) both accept sublingual immunotherapy. Cochrane trials have concluded that sublingual immunotherapy is a safe treatment. It is effective for reducing symptoms and requirement of medication in allergic rhinitis.
Allergy drops are clinically proven for both efficacy and safety. In fact, there are more than 600 citations in clinical trials worldwide.
Sublingual Immunotherapy has been endorsed by:
World Health Organization – ‘sublingual immunotherapy as a viable alternative to injection therapy’
Cochrane Collaboration the world’s most-trusted international organization dedicated to reviewing healthcare treatments, recently concluded
‘allergy drop immunotherapy significantly reduced allergy symptoms and use of allergy medications’.
World Allergy Organization states that: ‘ sublingual immunotherapy is effective in alleviating allergy symptoms to a similar or even greater extent than pharmacological treatments for both asthma and allergic rhinitis’
In our studies more than 60% patients of allergic rhinitis have marked symptom relief within the first few months of therapy.
SLIT IS PROVEN
With over 60 clinical trials proving efficacy, endorsement from the World Health Organization, the World Allergy Organization and the Cochrane Collaboration, SLIT is proven to be effective, safe and well tolerated
Is sublingual immunotherapy safe?
Sublingual immunotherapy drops are very safe. They contain the same natural extracts as in injections. Studies show that they do not have the same risk of anaphylactic shock as injections. They are safe enough to be taken at home. They are much safer to use in younger children.
Is sublingual immunotherapy safe for younger children?
Allergy shots(injections) are recommended for children only 7 years and above, however sublingual immunotherapy can be given for children from 2-5 years.
How long does it take for results to show?
It will take a few months to get a significant result in most patients. However, some patients get a significant relief within a few weeks. The doses are custom made as per patient and each patient has a unique response, with individual variation. Your allergy specialist will let you know more about this.
Since how long is sublingual immunotherapy available?
Immunotherapy has been around for over 100 years. Sublingual immunotherapy has gained popularity since the 1980s. at present globally the popularity has increased, especially in Europe, with 45% patients going for it.
Will insurance cover the sublingual immunotherapy cost?
Many insurance plans cover the allergy testing. However, you will have to check with your provider to see if sublingual immunotherapy is covered too. But since sublingual immunotherapy needs a onetime visit to the physicians clinic as it is home administered, the costs of injections and visits to the physicians clinic are saved, so overall the therapy costs are less.
Can I take the drops with me on vacation?
For short vacations about a week you can best avoid carrying them, but for long vacations you can safely take them along.
I am moving. Will the allergy drops protect me in my new home?
The allergy drops have been individualised per patient depending on your allergy testing report. They should provide comprehensive cover for your new environment too.
Why did I develop allergies as an adult?
Allergies can develop at any age. Due to hypersensitivity and physiological changes, even if you did not have allergies in childhood, you can develop them as an adult.
Do patients achieve remission?
The recommended period is 3 years for the immunotherapy. In spite of getting relief within a few weeks, the body needs a longer period of time for permanent adaptation. Some patients require allergy shots even for a longer period of time.
Immunotherapy versus antihistamines and corticosteroids
Medication like antihistaminic and corticosteroids provide only symptomatic relief. They do NOT cure the allergie. As long as you are taking them you are fine, but once you stop taking them your symptoms come back. Immunotherapy directly acts on the immune system, remodelling it to increase your resistance to certain allergens, reduce your sensitivity and symptoms. This makes you less dependent on medication.
